Role and Main Function in the Body
- Nitrogen Excretion: Urea is the final waste product of protein breakdown. Amino acids are metabolized into toxic ammonia, which the liver converts into urea (via the urea cycle) for safe transport in the blood.
- Kidney Function: Kidneys filter urea from the blood to be excreted in urine.
- Diagnostic Tool: Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) levels are used medically to evaluate kidney function.
